Cody is my husband Daryl's registered quarter horse.
If you already read about Gabe, you might recognize
the name Cody here. Yep, you guessed it. Cody was Gabe's
next-door stall-mate for the eight years that Gabe was
neglected in life. But Cody had a wonderful, loving
and attentive owner, a Santa Clara County, California, Sheriff who
used Cody as a police search and rescue horse, and also
rode Cody for pleasure.

Cody had even been trained to allow a wheel-chair-bound
former police officer roll his wheel-chair right under
Cody's belly for mounting purposes. Cody is now my husband,
Daryl's, horse that I surprised him with one Christmas.
How Cody came to us: I was looking for a good, bomb-proof
horse to give to Daryl for Christmas that year. When an NH
trainer friend told me that Cody was being put up for
sale because the sheriff wanted a horse now that he
could also teach barrel racing to (and at 15 then, Cody
was deemed too old to start that), light bulbs went
on inside my head. I went to check Cody out and fell
in love with him instantly.
I put Cody through every maneuver imaginable and
he passed my safety-tests with flying colors. I had
a vet check and he was perfectly sound and healthy.
Even better, Cody had good past-handling, knew what
it was to be loved and was very gentle and willing.
But he was also bombproof! (Cody had even been shot
off of!). He'd actually gone through the required police
bomb-proofing program. But his legendary calm, protective
acceptance of wheelchairs under his belly sold me even
more.
But even more perfect: Cody was Gabe's former nearby
stall mate. They were already best friends (Gabe's only
horse friend for the eight years he was ignored and
stalled). Well, by this point in time, Gabe's life with
me was already turned around, and what would be more
perfect than to bring the two of them back together
again to bring Gabe even more life joy, as well as to
Cody. I bought Cody. The owner/sheriff was sad at the
parting moment, but he was happy that Cody was going
off to a home and family who promised to love and care
for his old friend well.
The day we brought Cody into our stables (still keeping
it secret from my husband until the next-week Christmas
date), we first placed Cody in our stable's large turn-out
arena. Then…we brought Gabe in to see Cody. It had been
over a year and a half since they had seen each other,
but the second they spotted each other, what happened
next just blew us away and melted our hearts. If horses
could jump for joy, that's exactly what transpired.
They leaped happily all over each other, whinnied, danced
around with such joy, such gleeful abandonment, like
two young colts, that it took everyone's breath away.
Horses never forget. Not even each other. And these
two had a very special bond.
Christmas came and we surprised Daryl with his new
partner. It was instant mutual love at first sight.
Happy
ending for everyone!
