QUESTION: I have an important question. I purchased a mare and her filly about five months ago. This filly just turned one year of age on April 15 I believe. The mom/mare looks like she is ready to foal again at any moment which I did not have a clue when I purchased her. If this is possible how soon can a mare conceive a foal after she has given birth to one? I asked the man I purchase alfalfa from and he said this is called back foaling (not sure I have spelled this phenomenon correctly). Since it takes 11 months of pregnancy and she would be pregnant, how soon could she give birth to a second foal? Thank you for answering when possible.
REPLY: Thanks for writing. I'm going to run your questions here by our resident breeding/foaling expert, Bob Claymier, who is featured in our:
Whispering Way™ Foundation Training Series: Complete Guide to Horse Breeding, Foaling and Foal Training, Featuring Bob Claymier DVD set.
Bob Claymier's Response:
I have often bred a mare back on her foal heat which is the most fertile and occurs a week or so after delivery, which means in essence that you could have another foal born within a year of the first. You can have an ultrasound done by a good vet and they can determine if the mare is in foal and can give you somewhat of a clue as to the age if they are really experienced. Good luck and let me know if you need additional help. Cheers, Bob
