Gallant
Bess
(1946)
Based on a true story, as told by Naval Reserve
officer Marvin Park, Bess is a beautiful
mare owned by young Tex (Marshall Thompson),
who runs a stock ranch. When Tex joins
the Seabees at the outbreak of WW2,
he is forced to leave Bess behind. The
mare dies while giving birth, putting
Tex in a deep blue funk until he befriends
another horse while stationed on a tiny
Pacific Island. The horse turns out
to be a good-luck charm for Tex and
his fellow seabees, prompting a series
of rather incredible plot twists.

The Gentleman From Arizona
(1940)
Ruth Reece plays Cupid-on-the-ranch, matchmaking
for the locals, who include a mindless millionaire,
his heiress, and a horse trainer. Plot culminates
at the track, where the millionaire's semi-wild
stallion is stirring up a cloud of dust
as a surprise entry in the important race.

Going Places (1938)
Dick Powell is a sporting goods salesman who needs to get some business, so he poses as a famous jockey and gets in with the horsey set. He falls in love with wealthy Anita Louise and then has to ride her uncle's steed, "Jeepers Creepers," in the big race. Louis Armstrong plays the horse's groom and gets to sing the big song based on the horse's name. Ronald Reagan is the devil-may-care son of the rich horse owner, Thurston Hall, and Louise is the lovely niece. The horse is very jumpy and can only be calmed when Armstrong sings to him so the race takes place with Powell aboard in the silks and Armstrong riding alongside with a bunch of musicians as they sing to the animal. The song "Dust" by Johnny Marvin earned an Oscar nomination and the film included the following Harry Warren tunes: "Jeepers Creepers," "Say It With A Kiss," "Oh, What A Horse Was Charley," and "Mutiny In The Nursery."

Golden Hoofs (1941)
Jane Withers trains horses on her grandfather's farm. The old man has to sell the farm though, and millionaire Charles "Buddy" Rogers buys it to get rid of Withers' trotters and build a training area for flat racehorses. She gets a crush on him and her horse loses a big race, but she wins his heart. Grandfather George Irving's pet project, a community hospital, gets some of the winning money, too.

Home In Indiana (1944)
A lad with a penchant for trouble is sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Indiana. Though he's not happy about the arrangement at first, his love of horses and his affection for a young colt that he plans to race make life bearable. He also finds romance with tomboyish Char who shares his love for horses. This movie was later remade into April Love (see above).

Horse Crazy (2001)
A ten-year-old boy who loves horses sneaks a ride with his big brother to Nevada, where the older sibling has found work at a ranch. The younger boy soon makes friends with two local kids his own age, and from them he hears the legend of a remarkable wild stallion named "The General." When the kids learn that a pack of horse rustlers have come to town to capture the General, the children decide it's their duty to catch the mustang first so no harm will come to him.

Added to that is the order from his boss that he invent an interesting ad campaign for the company's newest product, a stomach pill called "Aspercel." When he decides that the best thing to do is to buy a horse for his daughter and name it "Aspercel," the results aren't an immediate success. A fun Disney movie for the whole family.

The Horse Whisperer (1998)
Robert Redford directs this compelling story of 14-year-old Grace MacLean (Scarlett Johansson), who is emotionally and physically scarred after suffering a terrible accident while riding her prized horse, Pilgrim. Desperate to help her daughter, Grace's mother, Annie (Kristin Scott Thomas), a high-powered magazine editor, launches an all-out campaign to find a horse whisperer, someone with a unique gift for curing troubled horses. She learns of Tom Booker (Redford), who works to rebuild all the lives shattered by the accident. Love blossoms between the horseman and the uprooted sophisticate, resulting in unexpected consequences. The film was based on the popular novel by Nicholas Evans.
