Imprinting your newborn foal is one of the best ways to get horse
training off to a good and healthy start. But
what is foal imprinting and how is it done?
Imprinting is centered around the concept that when
a foal is born, it very quickly formulates opinions about the world. In the first few hours
and days after
birth, foals learn about 80% of what
they need to survive as a horse in this world. What we do as the human imprinting
the foal is to convince them early on that
all the things we will be subjecting them to for the rest of their lives is just
"a regular part of life," not things
to fear.
We now have a Whispering Way™ Foundation Training Series video which teaches this Foal Imprinting process and so much more!: Complete Guide to Horse Breeding, Foaling and Foal Training, Featuring Bob Claymier.

MORE FOAL IMPRINTING RESOURCES
To the left are books that
teach imprinting and early foal handling and training.
Below are links to various web sites
that give more information on imprinting and teach
the imprinting process step by step.
On the bottom are more videos
that teach imprinting and early foal handling and
training.
"Go Beyond Imprinting with Enhanced Foal Training. Enhanced Foal Training helps to instill correct behavior in the horse from the very beginning. Enhanced Foal Training is a methodology for bringing up young horses to be honest, highly intelligent and most importantly, adaptable. Enhanced Foal Training begins shortly after birth in conjunction with traditional imprinting because foals are ready, willing and able to learn shortly after birth. Enhanced Foal Training includes non-stressful exercises and challenges that are fun and infuses trust while creating a lasting bond between foal and handler. Additionally the logic of the method teaches a foal 'to learn how to learn' while it promotes skills and respect that are easily transferred to a foal's 'higher education' requirements upon maturity. With Enhanced Foal Training, foals begin to learn a life long work ethic that applies to independent work and schooling in unison with foals and other adult horses."

"Through
imprint training, a
young, impressionable
foal is very early taught
the lessons it will
need to know throughout
its life. The foal learns
to trust and respect
people, and that does
much to eliminate the
fear element."

"Certain
North American Indians
spoke to horses before
birth and handled foals
daily the first few
days after birth. Twenty-four
to forty-eight hours
after birth is a period
when some species, including
horses, can be imprinted."

|
"When
a foal is born you have
a 2 to 3 hour window
of opportunity for imprinting.
If the birth has gone
well for both mare and
foal, you can begin
a training process just
after the birth."

|
"Imprinting
is the art of introducing
yourself, a human, to
an animal infant shortly
after its birth. In
the wild, communication
takes place between
mother and offspring
within seconds after
birth." Click above to read more.
|
"What
if there was a way to
practically insure your
newborn foal would be
manageable and easy
to train later in his
life and it would take
about two hours on the
day he was born?"
Click above to read more.
|
"Imprinting
is the process of providing
experiences to the foal
so that they become
fundamental memories
influencing the foal
for the rest of its
life. If the foal learns
that certain experiences
are non-threatening
during its first moments
in the world, it will
be more likely to tolerate
or embrace those and
similar experiences
later on." Click above to read more.
|
"I
believe imprinting foals,
as done using good common
sense, by experienced
horse people, is an
essential tool in preparing
a foal for his future.
What follows is a brief
description of the imprinting
done during the first
few days with a foal
born at Valley Creek
Farm." Click above to read more.
